Wigan Athletic confirm that midfielder Ben Watson sustained a broken leg during today's 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that midfielder Ben Watson has broken his leg.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Raheem Sterling during the first half of today's 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Despite the severity of Watson's injury, Latics manager Roberto Martinez does not believe that Sterling did anything wrong.

"I haven't seen the challenge back, but I don't think either of the players were looking at each other," said Martinez. "Both were looking at the ball. It's a real accident. It's a nasty collision.

"More of a disappointment was the stamp on Dave Jones by Luis Suarez. That was a challenge that he could have been punished for."

Watson has made 10 appearances this season, with his only goal coming in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
