Jamie Carragher: 'I was embarrassed during my final season at Liverpool'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says that not playing during his final season at Anfield left him embarrassed.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said that not playing during his final season at Anfield left him "embarrassed".

Carragher, who retired in 2013 after 17 years at Liverpool, told The Anfield Wrap that he was fed up of being used as a substitute.

"I said to Brendan [Rodgers] 'I understand [Daniel] Agger and [Martin] Skrtel are your first choice, I want to help you as much as possible as a manager. I want to play, if I play well obviously I'd love to play, of course' and I got back into the team which was a brilliant ending for me," said Carragher.

"I'd had enough of being a substitute," he continued. "He knew then that I was actually close to jacking it in halfway through the season just because I wasn't involved. I was embarrassed in training every day."

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on August 17.
