Liverpool's Jay Spearing admits that it has been a "mixed season" for him so far.

Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has revealed his disappointment in not being a regular in the Reds' starting lineup but insists that he will keep "working hard" in order to impress boss Kenny Dalglish.

The 22-year-old has yet to start for the Merseyside club this season, and has only featured once as a substitute in the Premier League.

"It has been a mixed season for me so far," said Spearing. "With the new players that have come in I haven't had as many chances as I would have liked, but at the end of the day it's down to me to keep working hard every day in training and show the manager I deserve a chance when the time comes."

Despite not being given many opportunities this season, the Liverpool-born player insists that he must consider the 'positives'.

"I have to look at the positive side of things," he added. "The boss has put me on the bench for every Premier League game so far and I have played in the Carling Cup games, so I can't complain about that."

Spearing could appear for the Reds in tonight's Carling Cup tie against Stoke City.
