Liverpool confirm Gary McAllister appointment

Liverpool announce that former midfielder Gary McAllister has returned to the club as first-team coach.

Former midfielder Gary McAllister has returned to Liverpool as first-team coach.

Earlier this week, it had been reported that the Scot would be the latest name to be added to the backroom staff at Anfield after the departure of Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh.

Former Bristol City boss Sean O'Driscoll has already joined as assistant, and manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he is delighted to have agreed terms for the 50-year-old to return to Merseyside.

Rodgers told the club's official website: "Gary has a special connection with this club and its supporters, and I'm delighted he is joining our team as first-team coach.

"When I met him, I was struck by his passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for what we're looking to achieve here.

"He has experience coaching at the highest level and is someone who can connect with players and help them learn from his knowledge and understanding of representing this great club."

McAllister scored nine times in 87 matches during his two-year spell at the club between 2000 and 2002.
