Liverpool are out to equal a club winning record when Brentford make the trip to Anfield for Sunday's Premier League battle.

Liverpool will be out to equal a club winning record when Brentford make the trip to Anfield for Sunday's Premier League battle.

Jurgen Klopp's men have flattered to deceive in each of their last two games, only coming away with a point from their last top-flight meeting with Luton Town courtesy of Luis Diaz's injury-time header.

The Reds were then on the receiving end of a 3-2 Europa League beating at the hands of Toulouse on Thursday night, ending their perfect continental record and dashing their hopes of an early last-16 qualification.

However, underwhelming results at Kenilworth Road and Stadium Municipal could pale into insignificance this weekend, as Liverpool have refortified their Anfield base since the start of the new term.

From each of their first eight home games in the 2023-24 season - five in the Premier League, two in the Europa League and one in the EFL Cup - the Reds boast a 100% success rate, while also scoring at least twice in each occasion.

Should Klopp's side put Brentford to the sword in similar circumstances, it will mark only the second time in their history that they have won nine home games on the trot while scoring multiple goals on each occasion.

The only previous Liverpool team to achieve such a feat were Bob Paisley's crop, who prevailed in nine straight Anfield contests by two or more goals in a five-month sequence from May 1980 to October 1980.

A 4-1 rout of Aston Villa kickstarted that run, before Liverpool also defeated Crystal Palace, Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Brighton & Hove Albion, Middlesbrough, Bradford City, Swindon Town and Oulu Palloseura while netting at least two goals, obliterating the latter 10-1 in the European Cup.

A 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town ended Liverpool's golden sequence 43 years ago, and Paisley's men would only finish fifth in the 1980-81 First Division after their hot streak was snapped.

In addition, Liverpool could also open a Premier League campaign with six home wins for only the third time, having also managed to do so in their title-winning 2019-20 season and 2020-21 campaign.

Leeds United were the last team to walk away from Anfield with a Premier League win as Liverpool's opponents in October 2022, after which the Reds lost 3-1 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium before a 1-0 home beating.

A personal slice of history is also at stake for Mohamed Salah, who could join yet another exclusive club of Premier League legends with another Anfield goal on Sunday afternoon.

The Egypt international has already found the net against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, West Ham United and Everton at home this term, seeing him either score or assist in 14 straight Premier League home matches.

Should Salah breach the Bees' backline on Sunday, he will also become just the fourth player in Premier League history to score in his side's first six home games of a season.

In the 1995-96 campaign, Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand both did so for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United respectively, nine years before ex-Arsenal man Thierry Henry netted in six successive Highbury matches in 2004-05.
