Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge defends England comments

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge defends comments he made claiming that playing for his club is more important that playing for England.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has defended comments he made claiming that he is more concerned with playing for his club than for England.

The 24-year-old, who recently pulled out of the England squad with a thigh injury, received a backlash from some fans after he told the Reds' official website that his main ambition was challenging for domestic trophies.

However, Sturridge has now clarified his stance on Twitter and wrote: "Some people never understand. Read the interview. If I do well for my club I will play for England. If I'm not fit I can't play.

"Don't get it twisted.... England is the pinnacle. To play for them is a dream come true. Just hoping to recover for Monday #Godisgood."

Sturridge has made six appearances for England after winning his first cap in 2011.
