Jurgen Klopp "really happy" with Liverpool performance in Tottenham draw

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that he was "really happy" with his side's performance in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took the positives from his side's performance against Tottenham Hotspur as the two Premier League clubs shook hands on a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

The Reds were bidding to return to the top of the Premier League table, while Antonio Conte's side were seeking to usurp Arsenal back into the Champions League places.

Spurs absorbed a wealth of Liverpool pressure in the opening exchanges and ultimately went ahead through Son Heung-min's 20th goal of the Premier League season just before the hour mark.

However, the Reds' relentless drive soon paid off as Luis Diaz cut inside and witnessed his effort take a nick off Rodrigo Bentancur, which wrong-footed Hugo Lloris and nestled into the bottom corner.

Klopp's side did not produce a plethora of clear-cut chances in the last knockings, with multiple crosses coming to nothing against a steadfast Lilywhites defence.

Conte's men could have won it right at the death as the ball found Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's head in acres of space, but the Dane tried and failed to head it across goal for Harry Kane instead.

"I'm really happy with the performance and proud of the mentality they showed against an incredibly good opponent with a game plan," Klopp told BT Sport.

"A few things today were on a different level, the counter press was outstanding. But they scored a goal and we had to keep our calm and increase the pressure and that's a massive challenge. But we did and scored the equaliser.

"Obviously not the result we wanted but the performance was what I wanted so with that I'm fine.

"It is incredibly difficult to play against an opponent with world-class players and a world-class manager when they have had a week to prepare and we play every three days.

"The dressing room is not flying, come on, but there are other games to play. We just have to keep going. I am not as disappointed as people might think. There are still games to go. We will go for it."

Liverpool's point on the night means that they have gone back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference, but Manchester City can move three points clear with victory over Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have closed the gap to Arsenal to just one point, but the Gunners have a game in hand and can extend that to four when they host Leeds United on Sunday.

Klopp's side have little time to rest before taking on Aston Villa on Tuesday, while Spurs prepare for a make-or-break North London derby with Arsenal on May 12.
