Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher claims that the Reds 'have a problem' in midfield after failing to replace Philippe Coutinho.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Reds 'have a problem' in midfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side are just one point off Premier League leaders Manchester City in the table, but have only won two of their last six in England's top flight.

On Sunday, the Reds were held to a goalless draw by Everton, with Mohamed Salah missing a couple of excellent chances on the afternoon.

Klopp attempted to turn the tide by introducing James Milner to his midfield, but Carragher has suggested that a lack of creativity in that area of the field is causing a problem for his former club.

Indeed, the pundit has said that the fact Liverpool failed to replace Philippe Coutinho last January is currently costing them.

"Yes, in terms of the make-up of the midfield (when asked if there is an issue). But it's not just a problem now, I think that was even a problem if you go back to the end of last season," Carragher told Sky Sports News.

"They lost Coutinho last January and they never replaced him. They tried to replace him with someone from Lyon (Nabil Fekir) in the summer but they couldn't get him, there wasn't three or four different options.

"So it's not just a case of right now, in the summer, even if Liverpool win the league, it is still a position I think they will try and fill because it's not just a case of one player going in there and being the best player. They don't even really have that type of player off the bench."

Liverpool, who have been linked with a swoop for Real Madrid playmaker Isco, are next in action at home to Burnley next weekend.
