Former Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley confirms that Liverpool are interested in acquiring Anthony Gordon during the current summer transfer window.

Former Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has confirmed that Liverpool are interested in acquiring Anthony Gordon during the current summer transfer window.

The Reds are said to be in the market for a new winger with newly appointed sporting director Richard Hughes looking to provide Arne Slot with the resources needed for success in his inaugural year as Liverpool's head coach.

Slot arrived at Anfield at the end of last season following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, who was appointed as Liverpool's manager in 2015.

During his time in Merseyside, Klopp led the Reds to eight titles, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the Community Shield, a UEFA Super Cup and a Fifa Club World Cup.

The German was also responsible for bringing in the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and Diogo Jota, among others.

Former Newcastle co-owner confirms Liverpool's interest in Gordon

Widespread rumours suggested that Liverpool attempted to finalise a deal for Gordon at the end of June, while Newcastle sought to sell some players to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Now, those speculations seem to have been confirmed, with former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley admitting that the Reds had signalled their interest in the 23-year-old prior to her departure from Tyneside.

Speaking to The Athletic, Staveley said: "I knew what was coming in terms of me leaving but the fans and PIF deserved every focus of mine. Had I left before (the PSR deadline) and we'd breached, then that would have been bad. It was very, very difficult, but I was determined to make sure Darren has a clear runway.

"My biggest concern was that we'd lose Alex (Isak) or Anthony (Gordon) because Liverpool chased him and both are extraordinary players. Negotiating is tough because you have to pretend it means nothing to you when it means everything."

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also revealed this week that the Reds maintain a 'strong interest' in the England international and he is someone they 'really rate internally'.

Despite having played for Everton before moving to St James' Park, Gordon is a lifelong supporter of Liverpool and is believed to be open to a move to Anfield.

Romano added that the Reds had made an initial offer for the winger, which included an existing player from Liverpool heading in the other direction, but the Magpies were unwilling to accept their initial proposal.

Quiet summer so far for Liverpool

Things have been quiet on the transfer front at Anfield this summer, with the club yet to make any signings during the current window.

Reports in recent days suggest that two players are expected to leave Liverpool in the coming days after being told to train with the Under-21s.

It is understood that the players in question are young centre-backs Rhys Williams and Billy Koumetio, both of whom were sent on loan to Port Vale and Blackburn Rovers respectively in the second half of last season.

The Reds have also bid farewell to Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Adrian this summer.

Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour in the US and will take on Arsenal and Manchester United in the next week before returning to England to complete final preparations ahead of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
