Liverpool 'disagree' with key attacker over improved contract amid Barcelona, PSG interest

Liverpool and Luis Diaz are reportedly struggling to make progress in talks over a new contract due to 'disagreements' over the Colombian's wage packet.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz is supposedly unhappy with the lack of an improved contract offer from the Reds and could consider moving on in the summer of 2025.

The Colombia international's future was the subject of much debate earlier this year, as both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona were rumoured to be keeping a close eye on his uncertain Anfield situation.

Diaz is still on the same terms he penned upon his arrival from Porto in January 2022, but he made a terrific start to life under Arne Slot and now has nine goals and two assists to show from 18 games in the current campaign.

The 27-year-old has hit a plateau in the Premier League, only providing one assist in his last seven games and failing to find the back of the net, but he struck a hat-trick in a 4-0 Champions League demolition of Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

Diaz's contract on Merseyside still has just under three years left to run, but according to Antena 2, Liverpool are struggling to make headway in their attempts to tie the South American down to fresh terms.

The Reds have apparently hit some roadblocks in talks with Diaz's camp, as there have been 'disagreements' over a possible salary increase and alterations to his deal, and the attacker is not ruling out a move elsewhere next year.

Even though Liverpool value Diaz as a fundamental figure in Slot's attack, there are 'differences' in what the Reds are prepared to offer him going forward and what the attacker believes he is worth to the team.

Diaz's stance had apparently put PSG and Barcelona back on red alert, as the former are still searching for a Kylian Mbappe successor and could also let Randal Kolo Muani leave on loan in January amid interest from Premier League clubs.

Meanwhile, Barcelona would supposedly only be able to add Diaz to their ranks if they can offload some of their current players first, as they are continuing to tread a fine line in relation to Financial Fair Play rules.

Liverpool and Diaz are expected to continue their talks in the coming weeks in the hope of reaching an agreement, but the Reds may have no choice but to open the floor to bidders if they cannot overcome their impasse.

Liverpool coughed up £42.3m to bring Diaz to Anfield midway through the 2021-22 season, and the Colombia international now has 33 goals and 15 assists under his belt from 116 games for the Merseyside titans.

What about Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk?

Diaz's contract is just one of a few high-profile renewals that the Reds hierarchy are tasked with securing in the coming months, as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold could all still leave for nothing in 2025.

However, a separate report has claimed that Van Dijk has decided to stay put at Anfield with a new contract, and confirmation of the Dutchman's new deal could arrive imminently.

Salah is also thought to prefer a stay rather than a move elsewhere, even if he did strikingly claim that he was more "out than in" as he awaits a first offer of a renewal from the powers-that-be.

Alexander-Arnold's situation is far more uncertain, though, as it has been claimed that the right-back is rebuffing Liverpool's attempts to extend his deal amid Real Madrid's well-documented pursuit.
