Jonjo Shelvey: 'Steven Gerrard wanted me to stay'

Jonjo Shelvey says that Steven Gerrard wanted him to stay at Liverpool in the summer rather than join Swansea City.

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that Steven Gerrard told him to stay at Liverpool during the summer.

The 21-year-old moved to the Liberty Stadium in July for around £5m, having spent just over two years at Anfield.

Shelvey will come up against his former club for the first time since leaving on Monday, and he is happy with life in Wales.

"I said to him (Gerrard) that I might have to go elsewhere to get football," Shelvey told Sky Sports News.

"He told me 'stay here, you'll get your chance' and it was great to hear that from him but I felt I needed to get away.

"You probably think I'm mad because that's turning him down to stay there but I felt I had to come away to play. I'm lucky that I've found my feet at a club like Swansea."

The two sides meet in Swansea on Monday with kickoff at 8pm.
