Arne Slot provides Liverpool deadline day transfer update with "opportunity" claim

Liverpool manager Arne Slot reveals that he is not expecting any new signings to arrive at Anfield on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has affirmed that he does not expect any new players to arrive at Anfield on transfer deadline day, but the club will be open to the right "opportunity".

At the start of the Premier League season, Liverpool were the only English top-flight side not to have made a single signing, although they have now added two new faces to their ranks.

A bargain £10m deal for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa was secured on Thursday, and the Reds have also signed Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join Slot's squad in 2025.

However, Liverpool have failed in their efforts to sign a new defensive midfielder, having made a desperate attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, only for the Spaniard to show unwavering loyalty to the La Liga side.

The Reds have also been tipped to sign a new centre-back amid uncertainty surrounding the long-term futures of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but they have missed out on the signatures of Mohamed Simakan and Lutsharel Geertruida.

Slot "not expecting" deadline day Liverpool signings

Amid the deadline day frenzy, Slot addressed the media bright and early on Friday morning, as Liverpool gear up for this weekend's blockbuster Premier League showdown against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was inevitably asked about any late business at Anfield, and he refused to completely close the door on more incomings, but he is not anticipating any late twists or turns.

"We're happy with the ones we've signed. I've said many times, it's difficult for us to make the team even stronger because we already have a very strong team and if we then find them [new signings], then we are very happy with that," Slot said.

"Chiesa is someone who can help us for the short term and Mamardashvili is for the long-term future of the club and that's why we signed him. I'm not expecting anything but it's no different than the days before. If we see an opportunity, we could act but I'm not expecting anything."

Slot also addressed the Caoimhin Kelleher situation, as Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper has been linked with a move away all summer long, having grown tired of serving as Alisson Becker's deputy.

Slot hints at Kelleher stay after Liverpool reject bid

Liverpool have apparently turned down a late bid from Nottingham Forest for Kelleher, whom they have always valued at around £25m, and Slot has suggested that the Republic of Ireland international will stay for at least one more season.

Asked if Mamardashvili's signing could impact Kelleher's Liverpool future, Slot replied: "Maybe, but we have to make decisions as well, it's not just the player. If you work at a club like Liverpool, you need a lot of competition and a lot of good players.

"Like I said, Mamardashvili is one for the future and we're really happy with the goalkeeper we have at the moment. Caoimhin is one of them, so we're in a good place when it comes to goalkeepers both now and in the future.

"It's the same for incomings, if it's right for the player and club, we will act. If that opportunity comes for the both of us, it will happen. But my main attention is on Man Utd and not on the outgoing players."

The Reds boss was also asked whether Chiesa could make his debut for Liverpool in the clash with Man United, but he has suggested that the 26-year-old will not be involved at Old Trafford, having not played any competitive football since the Euros.
