The Liverpool captain has previously stated that he is happy at Anfield, but he recently admitted that there had been no progress in contract discussions.

As it stands, Liverpool are running the risk of losing Van Dijk for nothing next summer, with the defender able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January.

Van Dijk remains an important figure at Anfield

Van Dijk may have turned 33 last month, but he still remains one of the most important players in the Liverpool squad.

The Netherlands international has made 270 competitive appearances since joining the Reds from Southampton in January 2018.

Van Dijk has enjoyed significant success during his time at Anfield, helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and two EFL Cups.

While there may be uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, Van Dijk will currently be focused on Liverpool's Premier League opener against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday.
