Preview: Luton Town vs. Preston North End - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Luton Town and Preston North End, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Luton Town will attempt to clinch their first win of the season when they play host to Preston North End in the Championship on Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, will look to claim consecutive victories after beating Huddersfield Town 4-1 in the EFL Cup.

After being eliminated in the playoff semi-finals last term, Luton have made a slow start to the 2022-23 campaign.

They opened the season with a goalless home draw against Birmingham City before drawing 1-1 against Burnley last weekend.

Following consecutive draws, the Hatters had hoped they were on their way to a win in midweek when Carlos Mendes Gomes and Tom Lockyer gave their side a 2-1 lead against Newport County.

However, goals from Chanwa Zimba and James Waite condemned Luton to a first-round exit of the EFL Cup for the second straight season.

Despite losing in midweek, Nathan Jones will be confident that his side can pick up a positive result on Saturday after avoiding defeat in their previous seven Championship home games.

Meanwhile, Preston have also begun their Championship campaign with consecutive draws, but unlike their hosts both of their contests ended goalless.

After failing to find the net in their opening two league matches, Preston responded emphatically in midweek with a 4-1 win over Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup.

Troy Parrott opened the scoring before Ali McCann netted a brace before the half-hour mark that all but ended the contest by half time.

Brad Potts added to the scoreline after the break, and although Jordan Rhodes pulled one back for Huddersfield, Ryan Lowe's side cruised to a comfortable first-round victory.

Preston will now turn their attention to Saturday's contest where they will aim to win away against Luton for the first time since November 1999.

Team News

Luton are expected to be without the services of Louie Watson and Fred Onyedinma who are sidelined with injury issues, while Alfie Doughty is a doubt due to a hamstring problem.

After making a number of changes for the midweek EFL Cup tie, Jones is expected to name a side similar to the one that drew 1-1 against Burnley last weekend.

The Luton boss is expected to bring Harry Cornick and Elijah Adebayo back into the forward line, with the pair looking to open their respective accounts for the season.

As for Preston, Sean Maguire remains out with an Achilles injury, while Bambo Diaby will also be absent despite nearing a return.

Alvaro Fernandez was forced at half time on his debut, but the Manchester United loanee is expected to be fit enough to feature on Saturday.

Although he scored a brace in midweek, McCann may have to settle for a place on the bench, with Alan Browne and Ben Whiteman expected to operate in central midfield.

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Horvath; Osho, Bradley, Potts; Bree, Campbell, Freeman, Clark, Bell; Cornick, Adebayo

Preston North End possible starting lineup:
Woodman; Cunningham, Storey, Bauer, Fernandez; McCann, Whiteman; Potts, Johnson, Ledson; Parrott

We say: Luton Town 1-1 Preston North End

Although Preston recorded an impressive victory at the weekend, they have played out consecutive league draws, and we think that they will have to settle for a draw when they face a Luton side that have also drawn their opening two Championship games.
