Preview: Luxembourg vs. Faroe Islands - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Nations League clash between Luxembourg and Faroe Islands, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fresh off the back of picking up their first win at the Nations League, Faroe Islands square off with Luxembourg at the Stade de Luxembourg in Group C1 of the Nations League on Tuesday.

The hosts, who are currently second in the group standings, head into the game on a run of four consecutive defeats on home turf and will be looking to end this poor streak.

Luxembourg were denied a third consecutive victory in the UEFA Nations League as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Turkey when the sides met on Saturday.

Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring in the 37th minute to put the visitors in front heading into the interval before substitute Serdar Dursun made sure of the result with a 76th-minute strike.

Prior to that, Luxembourg snapped a two-game losing streak courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Lithuania in their group opener on June 4 before seeing off Faroe Islands 1-0 three days later.

While Luc Holtz's side will be looking to return to winning ways, they have struggled for results at home, where they are currently on a four-game losing streak and have failed to taste victory in any of their last five outings since a 2-1 win over Azerbaijan in September 2021.

Elsewhere, Faroe Islands got their Nations League campaign up and running when they fought back from one goal down to scrape a 2-1 victory over Lithuania last time out.

In an action-packed first half at the Torsvollur Stadium, Fedor Cernych put the visitors ahead inside the opening seven minutes, but Viljormur Davidsen and Jakup Biskopsto Andreasen scored in a 25-minute spell to turn the game on its head.

Prior to that, Faroe Islands suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Turkey in their group opener on June 4 before losing 1-0 against Luxembourg three days later.

Hakan Ericson's men's will fancy their chances of making it two wins from two for the first time since September 2020 as they go up against an opposing side who they are unbeaten against in four of the previous five meetings between the sides, claiming three wins and one draw in that time.

Faroe Islands have picked up three points from a possible nine in Group C1 to occupy third place in the standings, three points above rock-bottom Lithuania and three below Tuesday's visitors in second place.

Team News

Luxembourg coach Luc Holtz on March 27, 2021© Reuters

With his booking against Lithuania last time out, 32-year-old Odmar Faero joins Rene Shaki Joensen and Solvi Vatnhamar on the Faroe Islands suspension list.

Hordur Askham is a doubt for the hosts after the Havnar Boltfelag defender was hauled off inside the opening 25 minutes in the aforementioned game.

With both starting centre-backs set to miss Tuesday's clash, manager Ericson could call upon Sonni Nattestad and Heini Vatnsdal to deputise at the heart of the back four.

Meanwhile, despite their defeat against Turkey, Holtz could name an unchanged starting side on Tuesday, meaning we could see a back four of Marvin Martins, Maxime Chanot, Michael Pinto and Dirk Carlson shielding Anthony Moris between the sticks.

However, Sheriff Tiraspol man Sebastien Thill will push for a straining role at the centre of the park, potentially coming in for 21-year-old Mathias Olesen, who came off at the interval last time out after struggling to make his mark.

Up top, Norwich City man Danel Sinani, who registered six goals and three assists while on loan at Huddersfield Town, should spearhead the attack for the third game running, teaming up with Gerson Rodrigues and Yvandro Borges Sanches.

Luxembourg possible starting lineup:
Moris; Martins, Chanot, Pinto, Carlson; Sanches, Barreiro, Martins, S Thill; Sinani, Rodrigues

Faroe Islands possible starting lineup:
Nielsen; Rolantsson, Nattestad, Vatnsdal, Davidsen; Bjartalid, Vatnhamar, Andreasen, Olsen; Olsen, Johannesen

We say: Luxembourg 1-1 Faroe Islands

We expect Faroe Islands to put up a fight as victory here could see them move level on points with the hosts in second place. However, they have managed just one win from their last 12 away games and we predict the spoils will be shared with both sides settling for a point apiece.
