Ten-man Lyon hold Saint-Etienne to move top

Ten-man Lyon earn a hard-fought 2-2 at home to Saint-Etienne to move top of Ligue 1.

Lyon moved top of Ligue 1 after battling to a 2-2 draw with Saint-Etienne, despite playing with 10 men for an hour at Stade de Gerland tonight.

Nabil Fekir came within the width of the woodwork from firing les Dogues ahead on 16 minutes when his bullet shot cannoned off the crossbar.

It was a sign of things to come, however, as Clinton N'Jie latched on to Fekir's through-ball before casually slotting past Stephane Ruffier on 24 minutes.

It would prove to be the only high point in an otherwise torrid half for Lyon, though, as Lindsay Rose was sent off five minutes later for handling in the area, with Max Gradel expertly dispatching the penalty.

Things went from bad to worse in first-half stoppage time, with Romain Hamouma beating Anthony Lopes in a one-on-one to give the visitors a half-time lead.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Lyon illustrated why they are fighting at the top end of the division when Christophe Jallet leapt highest to nod Fekir's free kick past Ruffier early in the second half to win a point.

The result takes Lyon back above Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference, with the reigning Ligue 1 champions having played a game fewer.
