Mainz 05 push closer to safety with win over Augsburg

Mainz 05 secure a comfortable 2-0 win over Augsburg in the Bundesliga thanks to goals from Shinji Okazaki and Ja-Cheol Koo.

Mainz 05 moved a step closer to securing safety in the Bundesliga as goals from Shinji Okazaki and Ja-Cheol Koo gave them a 2-0 victory over hosts Augsburg this afternoon.

Augsburg perhaps started the better side and came close on two separate occasions through Tobias Werner and Daniel Baier, who were both wasteful from inside the Mainz area.

The visitors looked to soak up the Augsburg pressure and they took the lead when Pablo De Blasis broke away at pace before slipping a through ball into the path of Okazaki, who tucked home neatly into the bottom-left corner in the 32nd minute.

The away team might have taken a 2-0 lead into the interval, only for Johannes Geis to see his attempt kept out by Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz.

Mainz wasted another good chance after the break when Koo found Yunus Malli, but he could only fire straight at the keeper from close range.

The visitors cemented all three points with just a few minutes left to play thanks to Koo, who made it 2-0 having collected in the centre of the box to rifle an unstoppable attempt into the top-left corner.
