Jose Mourinho writes off Manchester City's chances of progressing to the Champions League knockout stages ahead of tomorrow night's match at the Etihad.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he finds Manchester City's disappointing Champions League record hard to understand.

City have failed to register a victory in four European games this season to leave their hopes of qualification hanging by a thread.

Mourinho thinks that the Premier League champions are effectively out ahead of tomorrow night's match at the Etihad.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think they're out for the second consecutive time, so that must be difficult for them.

"Last season City were out in the group phase. I think this season they will be out again. I think they can win on Wednesday, of course, and I think they can win in Dortmund, but eight points is not enough.

"I speak for myself. If Real Madrid loses a final or a semi-final or a quarter-final, that's football. When you are out at the group phase, it's more difficult to accept and to understand. I don't think it's normal when you're out of the competition at a very early stage."

Madrid can secure their place in the last 16 if they beat Roberto Mancini's side on Wednesday.
