Half-Time Report: Gylfi Sigurdsson gives Swansea City hope

Gylfi Sigurdsson scores late in the first half to bring Swansea City back into contention against Manchester City.

Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson scored on the stroke of half time to bring his side back into their home contest against Manchester City at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.

The visitors, who will secure an automatic place in next season's Champions League by avoiding defeat, had put themselves in command thanks to goals from Yaya Toure - his 50th in the Premier League - and James Milner.

It was the hosts that made a positive start to proceedings in South Wales, with the returning Bafetimbi Gomis in the thick of the action.

The French striker was presented with three opportunities within the opening 12 minutes, the first of which was saved by visiting goalkeeper Joe Hart, while his other two attempts were off target.

As the Swans continued to pile on the pressure in search of the opening goal, Hart was again called into action in the 16th minute.

Winger Nathan Dyer caught City centre-back Eliaquim Mangala in possession, only for his shot, which was bound for the far post, to be parried to safety by the England number one.

Then, just five minutes later and with what was their first meaningful attack of the game, the away side broke the deadlock.

Toure, potentially playing in his penultimate game for City if reports surrounding his future prove to be true, drove a shot goalwards from inside the area. It took a deflection off Swansea skipper Ashley Williams and deceived Lukasz Fabianski in the home goal.

Having broken the deadlock, City took command and went on to double their advantage nine minutes before the break.

Frank Lampard spearheaded a breakaway from a corner before picking out Sergio Aguero. The Argentine in turn played in Milner, who cut inside from the left flank to curl his shot beyond the reach of Fabianski.

It seemed that the 2-0 scoreline would remain that way as the interval approached, but Sigurdsson powered in a low shot from the edge of the area to restore Swansea's faith ahead of the second half.
