Joao Cancelo, on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester City, is reportedly already growing frustrated with his recent lack of starts under Julian Nagelsmann.

Joao Cancelo is reportedly already growing frustrated with his role at Bayern Munich following his loan move from Manchester City in January.

The Portugal international made the shock move to the Allianz Arena on a temporary deal two months ago, having quickly fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola.

The emergence of Rico Lewis pushed Cancelo down the pecking order, while Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake have also been utilised in the full-back areas for the Premier League champions this season.

Cancelo, who denied that a rift with Guardiola led to his Man City departure, immediately hit the ground running at Bayern Munich, claiming an assist in each of his first two games for the club.

However, Josip Stanisic has been preferred to the 28-year-old in Bayern's last two Bundesliga games, and Cancelo was an unused substitute in Saturday's 2-1 win over Stuttgart.

Bayern now prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday evening, a game which Benjamin Pavard will miss due to suspension after seeing red in the first leg.

As a result, the door could have been open for Cancelo to start against the French champions, but according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Man City loanee will be on the bench again.

Stanisic is likely to get the nod in a back three alongside Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt, while Kingsley Coman and Alphonso Davies should start in the wing-back roles.

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann supposedly views Cancelo as an out-and-out right-back rather than a wing-back, and the Portuguese will therefore have to be content with a substitute appearance at best in the Champions League.

Cancelo, who has "no chance" of starting over Davies or Coman, is reportedly remaining quiet about the situation, but he is growing frustrated at his immediate demotion to a peripheral role.

Bayern possess the option to sign Cancelo permanently for €70m (£62.4m) in the summer transfer window, but sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic recently admitted that the Bavarians will struggle to cough up the fee.

"After the transfer was done, we actually thought again about how long we've been dealing with Joao. We came up with more than four years. Either our position was filled or we didn't have the money for it," Salihamidzic told Bild.

"We're playing with open cards. This sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years. If all sides really want a common solution, you can manage that in the end. He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years."

Prior to departing for Bayern, Cancelo racked up nine goals and 22 assists in 154 games for Man City, winning two Premier League titles and being named in the PFA Team of the Year for the last two seasons.

The versatile defender remains under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2027, and he has not ruled out returning to Manchester in the summer.
