Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci responds to speculation linking him with a January transfer to Manchester City.

Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci has moved to downplay reports that he could move to Manchester City during the January transfer window.

As a result of Rodri suffering a season-ending knee injury, City boss Pep Guardiola must decide whether he wants to enter the market for a replacement.

City are already well stocked for players who can deputise in the meantime, with Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones, Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes all suitable options.

Nevertheless, given that City are in a strong position with regards to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, they have the freedom to spend big should they so wish.

Reports have indicated that Ricci is on the radar of more clubs than just City with other Premier League teams seemingly taking an interest.

"It is very pleasing"

Despite being the age of 23, Ricci has not necessarily always been viewed as a target for bigger clubs with his career having been spent at Empoli and Torino.

However, his performances in the first seven Serie A games of 2024-25 have led to him taking his tally with the Italy national team to five caps.

While Ricci is conscious that he is producing the best form of his career, he has hinted that he is aware that the interest will soon fade away if he loses focus.

Speaking to RAI Sport, Ricci said: "It is very pleasing of course, but I have learned to understand football a bit now.

"When things go well, you are linked with these big clubs and it is gratifying because it means you are on the right track."

He added, referencing Rodri: "My coach sends me videos to study, many of them are of Rodri. You can see the importance of the little things.

"I still have to improve on so many little things, like my positioning. [Torino coach Paolo] Vanoli sends me so many videos. Toro fans deserve more, as it is a club with immense history and so quite rightly their supporters are demanding."

How much would City have to pay?

Reports have indicated that Ricci would cost in the region of €40m (£33.5m) if City or another admirer pushes ahead with their respective interest.

However, they will argue that Ricci having less than two years remaining on his contract provides them with room for negotiation.
