Manchester City want to bring Douglas Luiz back to the club from Aston Villa during the January transfer window, according to a report.

Manchester City are reportedly keen to bring Douglas Luiz back to the club from Aston Villa.

The Citizens signed the midfielder from Vasco da Gama in 2017, penning a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, but he was immediately loaned to Girona.

Luiz made 46 appearances for Girona over the course of two seasons, before he left Man City permanently without making a first-team outing, joining Villa in the summer of 2019.

The Brazil international has been in impressive form for the Lions, making 171 appearances in all competitions, contributing 18 goals and 17 assists in the process.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Luiz over the last few transfer windows, and it is believed that the Gunners still have an interest in the South American, who has a contract at Villa Park until June 2026.

However, according to Football Insider, Man City are keen to bring the Brazilian back to the Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Citizens want to sign a midfielder in the winter market and are keen to secure his services at the start of 2024 amid claims of a buy-back clause in the deal that took him to Villa.

Kalvin Phillips is expected to leave the Premier League champions in January, with the England international again struggling for action during the 2023-24 campaign.

A departure for Phillips would open up space in the squad for Luiz, although Arsenal are also expected to be in the battle for his signature in the new year.

Man City remain without the services of Kevin De Bruyne due to a hamstring injury, with the Belgium international not expected to be back on the field until January at the earliest.

John Stones has returned from injury earlier than expected, with the England international back on the bench against Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

However, Manuel Akanji played alongside Rodri in central midfield against the Reds, with Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva playing further forward.

Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes are also currently both nursing injuries, with the central midfield pair remaining major doubts for next week's Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

Rico Lewis, 19, has also been used as a midfielder at times by head coach Pep Guardiola.
