Roberto Martinez backs Gareth Barry for England

Everton boss Roberto Martinez backs Gareth Barry for a place in the England World Cup squad.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has backed Gareth Barry's claims for a place in the England World Cup squad.

The on-loan midfielder has been one of the Blues' most consistent performers this term, and the Spanish manager believes that Barry's form could be enough to see him on the plane to Brazil in the summer.

He told reporters: "I still say he's the best English player in that [holding midfield] position.

"He's shown that at this present time and that could be a massive factor for him internationally. He's been performing really well and if he keeps it up, there will be more options for him."

Martinez also said that he plans to discuss a permanent move for the Manchester City man this summer.
