The visitors were first to threaten as Memphis Depay received a high ball and darted down the wing before firing a low cross into the box, but it proved just too heavy for Anthony Martial, whose toe-poke fell nicely to Jeroen Zoet.
Man Utd continued to press as Ashley Young weighed in with a number of crosses that caused panic in the PSV defence, but the game was brought to a halt in abrupt fashion on the quarter-hour mark.
Left-back Shaw, charging down the pitch during an attack, was brought down by a Hector Moreno tackle and, following a stoppage of several minutes, had to be stretchered off the pitch with an oxygen mask.

The game lost its tempo after the long stoppage, both sides having to work their way back into gear, but the hosts soon got back into the groove as Juan Mata's delivery from the right was nodded just wide from Martial.
Eventually Man Utd broke the deadlock courtesy of Depay, playing against the club where he made his name, as he collected Daley Blind's pass on the edge of the area before gliding through two challenges and slotting home.
However, the Dutch giants were back on level terms in first-half injury time when Maxime Lestienne's corner was headed home by Moreno.
