Wayne Rooney: 'I can play as striker for England at Euro 2016'

England captain Wayne Rooney says that he can still play as a striker at Euro 2016, but believes that his future is in midfield.

England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has claimed that he is capable of performing as a striker for England at Euro 2016, but has decided that his future is in midfield.

The 30-year-old is believed to have informed manager Roy Hodgson that he wants to play as a holding midfielder in France, but Hodgson selected him as a striker in his 26-man provisional squad.

"Sometimes you have to make choices in your career and, at the minute, it's probably better for me to play deeper," Rooney told Sky Sports News.

"It's a bit different with England because I could still be the striker, but next season midfield is probably where I see myself playing."

Rooney faces a battle for the striker spot considering the impressive form of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane, who has been backed at 18/1 by 888sport to end the tournament as leading scorer.

The online bookmaker currently has Germany's Thomas Muller has 7/1 favourite to win the Golden Boot, while Antoine Griezmann is backed at 11/1 to top the scoring charts for the tournament hosts.
