Manchester United will be looking to extend a 103-year FA Cup record against Liverpool when the two sides meet at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United will be looking to maintain a century-long record when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The record in question that the Red Devils are looking to extend is an unbeaten run at home to Liverpool in this competition that dates back 103 years.

Not since a 1921 first-round replay have Liverpool won away to United in the FA Cup, and that run could increase with another victory tomorrow for Erik ten Hag's side.

The sides met again at Old Trafford in 1948 when United ran out 3-0 winners, but they would not meet at this venue until 1999 after that, where the hosts won 2-1.

There was still a fair share of meetings between the sides in competition between those two fixtures though, as United came out on top in semi-final replays in both 1979 and 1985, as well as in the final in 1996, before also beating them in the fourth round in 1999 on their way to lifting the trophy that season.

Ryan Giggs's second-minute penalty saw United beat the Reds 1-0 in the third round back in 2011, helped by Steven Gerrard's first-half red card at Old Trafford, but they would lose to rivals Manchester City in the semi-finals later on in the campaign.

The most recent FA Cup meeting on home soil for United came behind closed doors in January 2021, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided his side into the fifth round by getting the better of Jurgen Klopp.

Bruno Fernandes scored a late winner after Mohamed Salah had put the visitors ahead and also levelled proceedings at 2-2, after goals from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

United's prospects do not look as favourable this time around though, given the form of Liverpool, who have been almost untouchable since losing at Arsenal at the start of February.

Klopp's side were able to hold Manchester City last weekend, and put 11 goals past Sparta Prague over two legs in the Europa League, as Liverpool have won eight of their last nine.

In comparison, Ten Hag's men are a long way off the top four in the Premier League, and have narrowly edged through on more than one occasion in the FA Cup.

Casemiro stepped up with a last-gasp goal to see off Nottingham Forest in the previous round, while League Two Newport County came from 2-0 down to level the tie in round four, before United sealed a 4-2 win.

The hosts must take some enthusiasm from their 0-0 draw at Anfield back in December, but scars will remain from last season's 7-0 defeat to their bitter rivals, and a 5-0 thrashing here the season before.
