Arsenal vs. Manchester United: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash between Arsenal and Man Utd, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Old foes will cross paths once again on Wednesday evening, when Arsenal and Manchester United lock horns in a colossal Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Both English titans come into the midweek affair after emphatic successes at the weekend, as Mikel Arteta's men made it three wins on the spin in all tournaments by besting West Ham United 5-2 at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim's Red Devils demolished Everton 4-0 to rise to ninth in the Premier League table, but the 20-time English champions have not won away from home in any competition since September.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 240
Arsenal wins: 89
Draws: 50
Man Utd wins: 101

A historic fixture that has thrown up many a memorable moment - the 8-2 Theatre of Dreams destruction, Arsene Wenger in the Old Trafford stands, Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira's tunnel bust-up and Sylvain Wiltord's iconic goal in 2002 to name but a few - Arsenal and Manchester United have now faced one another in 240 competitive matches in all tournaments.

The two Premier League powerhouses were then known as Newton Heath and Woolwich Arsenal when they first collided in the Second Division in 1894 - an engrossing 3-3 draw - which represents one of a half-century of stalemates between the two clubs.

Man United boast the bragging rights in terms of overall triumphs, though, overcoming Arsenal on 101 occasions and suffering defeat to their London counterparts 89 times, but the Gunners have had the Red Devils' number more often than not recently.

Indeed, each of Arsenal's last three Premier League matches against Man United has seen the Gunners emerge victorious, and if the hosts come up trumps again on Wednesday, they would have beaten the Red Devils in four straight league games for the first time ever.

Mikel Arteta masterminded a double over Erik ten Hag in the 2023-24 campaign, firstly overseeing a 3-1 Emirates success thanks to a Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus late show before Arsenal rocked up to a rainy Old Trafford in May and came out on the right end of a 1-0 scoreline.

The Gunners also had an Eddie Nketiah double to thank for a 3-2 home win over Man United in January 2023, prior to which the Red Devils marched to their most recent success in this fixture, a 3-1 Old Trafford triumph in September 2022.

North London has not been the happiest hunting ground for Man Utd in the past five years, though, as they have lost five and drawn one of their last six matches at the Emirates since last beating Arsenal away from home in a 2019 FA Cup clash.

No player enjoyed this battle of the behemoths more than Man United all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney, who scored 12 goals in meetings between Arsenal and the Red Devils, while David Herd -who played for both teams - netted 11 times.
