Ipswich Town vs. Manchester United: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Ipswich and Man Utd, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Ruben Amorim takes charge of his inaugural Manchester United match on Sunday afternoon, when his Red Devils side face Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the Premier League.

The Portuguese takes over from Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy with Man United languishing in 13th in the Premier League table and searching for just a second away win of the season in all competitions.

Meanwhile, hosts Ipswich are yet to prevail in a top-flight home game in the current campaign, although they did stun Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 before international football intervened.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 57
Ipswich wins: 19
Draws: 9
Man Utd wins: 29

Not one of the most frequent fixtures in English football and one that did not take place until 1958 - an FA Cup tie that Manchester United won 2-0 - there have now been 57 competitive showdowns between the Red Devils and Ipswich Town.

Unsurprisingly, the 20-time English champions lead the way in terms of successes with 29 to their name, with Ipswich boasting 10 fewer victories at 19, while 10 fewer games have coincidentally ended in a draw.

When the two sides lock horns in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, it will mark the end of a nine-year spell without a meeting between Man United and Ipswich since the Red Devils eased to a 3-0 EFL Cup third-round win in 2015.

Wayne Rooney, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial were responsible for the goals on that occasion, which saw Man United defeat Ipswich for the fourth time in a row, having also won three straight Premier League games from December 2000 to April 2002.

August 2000 was the last time that the Tractor Boys managed to avoid a beating at the hands of Man United - a 1-1 draw at Portman Road where David Beckham saved the Red Devils' bacon - and Ipswich have to go back to 1997 for their most recent success.

That year, the Suffolk outfit shocked Sir Alex Ferguson's men 2-0 in the League Cup, and their most recent Premier League triumph over Man United was a 3-2 home win in 1994, where Eric Cantona and Paul Scholes strikes were in vain.

However, sandwiched in between those two successes for Ipswich was the joint-biggest victory ever seen in the Premier League, as the Red Devils annihilated the Tractor Boys 9-0 on March 4, 1995, a game that saw Andy Cole score a fabulous five goals.

Cole is not the highest scorer in matches between Man United and Ipswich, though - that honour belongs to Denis Law (10) - while Paul Mariner struck eight for the Tractor Boys against the Red Devils.
