Wayne Rooney was delighted to return to the Manchester United team against Newcastle after missing four weeks with a leg injury.

Wayne Rooney has revealed his delight at returning to Manchester United action after missing a month with a gashed leg.

The England forward made his comeback from injury by playing 76 minutes in United's 2-1 Capital One Cup victory over Newcastle United tonight.

Rooney believes that the fixture gave him precious game time as he steps up his recovery, and the 26-year-old is hopeful that he can go back to featuring regularly in the coming weeks.

"It's been just over four weeks since I last played and I'm delighted to be back out on the pitch playing, and it was a good run-out for me and hopefully there's a lot more games to come," he said.

"I feel good, obviously it's always difficult in your first game back after a few weeks but it's great to get the minutes under my belt and hopefully that can benefit me."

The Red Devils have been drawn against Chelsea in the fourth round of the competition.
