Northern Ireland's Chris Baird has predicted that Paddy McNair will enjoy a "fantastic career", but warned him against becoming a victim of his own versatility.
McNair has already played in a number of positions for Manchester United, featuring mainly as a centre-back but also filling in at full-back or in midfield.
Baird himself has fulfilled a variety of roles during his career for club and country, and he believes that McNair has the quality to nail down a single spot.
"I see certain qualities in Paddy that I had at that age coming through... he can play any position," Baird told reporters.
"Personally, I wish I had held down one position. Say right-back, for instance. I played most of my early career there and it wasn't until a few years later I started playing midfield. It's down to Paddy. If he wants to hold down one position, go for it. He has that quality.
"Sometimes it has been a hindrance for me. Sometimes you're needed here, needed there, other games not at all. It's his own personal preference. Wherever he chooses, I think he'll have a fantastic career in football."
McNair is currently with the Northern Ireland squad ahead of Friday's friendly with Latvia, although he will play no part in the game due to an agreement with United.
