Michael Carrick: 'Paul Scholes is underrated'

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick feels that Paul Scholes deserves more recognition for the contribution that he has made to football.

Michael Carrick has insisted that his retiring Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes does not get enough credit.

Thirty-eight-year-old Scholes will call time on his career following tomorrow's clash against West Bromwich Albion having won virtually every trophy there is to win in the game, as well as receiving high praise from the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Xavi in recent years.

However, England midfielder Carrick has claimed that Scholes "is not regarded as highly in the game as he should be".

"First and foremost, I'd like to say that Scholesy still doesn't get enough credit as he should for me. He is not regarded as highly in the game as he should be. If you ask anyone who has played against him or played with him, he is right at the top of their tree of players," he told MUTV.

"It has been such a privilege to play with him. Even on Sunday [against Swansea], knowing it was his last Old Trafford game, it really meant a lot to me and I really enjoyed it. I made the most of it.

"It is sad to see him go but he has earned his retirement, he has done more than enough in the game and everyone has learned more than enough from him. I'm sure he'll enjoy himself."

Scholes has made 717 appearances for the Red Devils.
