Sir Alex Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to score a number of goals over the coming weeks for Manchester United.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wayne Rooney to embark on a goalscoring run of form.

The England frontman found the net on two occasions to help United claim all three points from their trip to local rivals and Premier League champions Manchester City yesterday afternoon.

With six league goals to his name so far this season, Ferguson believes that his striker is gearing up for a clinical spell in front of goal.

"Wayne has weighed in with his two goals and it's great to see because knowing him, he will go on a run now," Ferguson told reporters. "That's the kind of player he's always been.

"His finishes were terrific. They were good cut backs from Ashley Young and Rafael. The first goal was down to Ashley Young's determination to get beyond defenders and play him in and he knocked it into the corner of the net.

"They were two good finishes. He's made a really good contribution."

Rooney's brace at the Etihad Stadium resulted in him becoming the youngest player to score 150 Premier League goals.
