Shinji Kagawa insists that he wants to match the performances of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in a Manchester United shirt next season.

Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa has declared that he will strive for the consistency in performance attained by Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney next season.

Kagawa showed flashes of his quality during a solid first season with the Red Devils, which included a hat-trick against Norwich City.

The 24-year-old struggled for part of the campaign with a knee injury, but returned to finish the season in strong form.

Ahead of Japan's Confederations Cup campaign Kagawa revealed that he wants to use the competition to build momentum, with the aim to control games in the manner of teammates Van Persie and Rooney.

He told Sports Illustrated: "I wasn't satisfied with my overall performance but I played well in the second half of the season and started to get more and more confidence.

"Hopefully, I can keep that going at the Confederations Cup. In this business, you need to be like Rooney or Van Persie and prove yourself if you want the ball.

"I want to be a player like them, which means I need results."

Kagawa finished his debut campaign at Old Trafford with six goals in 26 appearances.
