The Premier League would be Cristiano Ronaldo's preferred choice if he were to leave Real Madrid this summer, according to former teammate Raul Meireles.

Raul Meireles has claimed that former Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo could be on his way back to the Premier League this summer as it "is the right place for him".

The Real Madrid forward is rumoured to have informed his club side that he wants to leave this summer due to a lack of protection when being accused of defrauding Spanish authorities of £13m in unpaid taxes.

Ronaldo has done little to quash suggestions in the British press that a move to Manchester United is on his mind, constantly refusing to answer questions on his future, and Meireles believes that a return to English football would suit him perfectly.

"Yes of course [he could return to the Premier League]," he told Sky Sports News. "He was very successful in the Premier League so I think that if he does not want to stay at Real Madrid, or he wants to leave, then the Premier League is the right place for him to be.

"He played before at Manchester United, so it could be them, but I think any team... Chelsea? I do not know, but he can play for any team in the Premier League."

Ronaldo, the scorer of 406 goals in 394 appearances for Madrid since joining in 2009, is currently competing for Portugal at the Confederations Cup in Russia.
