Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan had reportedly been close to a move to Manchester United in the summer before the club decided to pursue other options.
The 27-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League club, and according to Portuguese publication A Bola, a £22m deal was agreed but manager Louis van Gaal vetoed the transfer.
The Red Devils decided to instead sign Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial, while the Argentine was also reportedly being tracked by Atletico Madrid.
Gaitan has played 10 games in all competitions, scoring three goals including two strikes in two Champions League games.
