Mauricio Pochettino says that Southampton's defeat to Manchester United was not any easier to take after Sir Alex Ferguson's praise.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino is adamant that his side's praise from Sir Alex Ferguson does not avenge their defeat to Manchester United.

The Saints did go ahead at Old Trafford through Jay Rodriguez on Wednesday, before a Wayne Rooney brace sealed a nervy 2-1 win for the league leaders.

After the match, Ferguson heaped praise on the South Coast side for their performance, but Pochettino says that the kind words do not make him feel any better about the loss.

"His words don't really serve as a consolation to me," Pochettino told Sky Sports News.

"But I want to say thank you for those words and it also reinforces the way that we want the team to go forward."

Saints travel to Wigan Athletic in their next match on Saturday.
