Premier League and European clubs reportedly suffer a blow in their pursuit of Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Premier League and European clubs have reportedly suffered a blow in their pursuit of Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Six months after being sacked by Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann was appointed Germany head coach in September last year following the dismissal of Hansi Flick.

The 36-year-old put pen to paper on a short-term contract that expires after this summer's European Championships, held in Germany.

Nagelsmann has taken charge of five international matches with Die Mannschaft, winning two of those including a 2-0 friendly triumph over France last weekend.

The Bavarian-born boss is currently preparing his side for another friendly clash on Tuesday against the Netherlands, and Germany will then take on Ukraine and Greece in two final warm-up matches in early June before they kick-start Euro 2024 against Scotland on June 14.

Amidst Germany's preparations for a major tournament on home soil, speculation over Nagelsmann's future continues to swirl, with a swift return to club management having been mooted for some time.

Liverpool have allegedly identified Nagelsmann as a potential candidate to succeed fellow German Jurgen Klopp, who will be vacating his post at Anfield at the end of the season.

Manchester United's new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to have earmarked Nagelsmann as a possible replacement for current Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, while Newcastle United have also been tipped to move for the German amid uncertainty over the future of Eddie Howe.

In addition, Nagelsmann has attracted interest from former club Bayern and La Liga giants Barcelona, who are looking to replace soon-to-be departing duo Thomas Tuchel and Xavi respectively this summer.

However, according to Sky Sports News, Premier League clubs and other interested suitors could miss out on Nagelsmann, as he is discussing a contract extension with Germany.

The report adds that the German Football Federation (DFB) are working hard to keep hold of Nagelsmann, who would like his long-term future to be sorted out before Euro 2024.

Speaking to German news outlet ZDF about Nagelsmann's future following last weekend's win over France, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said: "It would be absolutely desirable from our side (to keep Nagelsmann). We're a good team, we get on well, we're in intensive dialogue.

"The coach's wish to create clarity before the European Championship has now been clearly stated. I have already said that we will not ignore this wish."

Asked if reported interest in Nagelsmann from top European clubs has forced Germany to act quickly, Neuendorf added: "No, this is a completely normal process. I think we will now seek discussions as soon as possible after the two international matches."

Nagelsmann suggested earlier this month that there is a "high probability" that he will sign a contract extension with Germany before Euro 2024 as he feels "comfortable" in his current managerial role.
