Manchester United chief Ed Woodward turned to Sir Alex Ferguson for advice on who to bring in as Jose Mourinho's replacement, according to a report.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly being employed by Manchester United in a consultancy role to help restore the club back to its glory days.

The legendary boss left Old Trafford in 2013 following a 26-year managerial spell that saw him win 38 major trophies.

Ferguson is now back involved in a backroom position, according to The Sun, having played an active part in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss earlier this week.

As well as giving the green light for Solskjaer to replace Jose Mourinho, the Scotsman is also said to have pulled strings for the return of his former assistant Mike Phelan.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward turned to Fergie when it became clear that Mourinho's time at the club was coming to an end, and the 76-year-old may now play a big part in naming the Portuguese's long-term successor.

A source is quoted as saying: "Once Woodward had talked to the Glazers and told them he wanted Jose out, he needed to be certain he could get the right kind of figure in for the short term at least.

"That's where Fergie came in and he helped make sure the whole thing happened with Solskjaer and Phelan."

Solskjaer's first match in charge ended in a 5-1 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday evening.
