Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has heaped praise on January arrival Bruno Fernandes, claiming that the Portugal international 'is the closest we've had to Paul Scholes for years'.

Fernandes has made an immediate impact at Old Trafford since arriving from Sporting Lisbon, registering two goals and three assists in his first five Premier League appearances prior to the coronavirus suspension.

Robson, who amassed 99 goals in 461 games for the Red Devils, has been quick to point out how instrumental the arrival of Fernandes has been in United's recent strong run of form.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Robson said: "The form before the lockdown was certainly encouraging. The indications were that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had got it right. Bruno Fernandes has proved a terrific signing.

"He looks a United player. Great attitude, always on the half turn looking to go forward. He's the closest we've had to Paul Scholes for years in terms of technique, how he finds pockets of space and his willingness to get a shot off.

"He gives the side greater balance and threat. When you combine that with Scott McTominay improving plus the prospect of Marcus Rashford returning to fitness. It looks good."

Solskjaer's side currently lie fifth in the Premier League table amid the coronavirus postponement.
