Sergio Romero: 'My competition with David de Gea good for Manchester United'

Manchester United keeper Sergio Romero insists that his competition with number one stopper David de Gea can only be a positive thing ahead of the new season.

Manchester United stopper Sergio Romero has suggested that Jose Mourinho's insistence on keeping number one keeper David de Gea at Old Trafford will lead to some important competition between the pair.

Romero served as United's second-choice goalkeeper last season, but the Argentina international proved a decisive figure in the club's Europa League-winning campaign, having played in all 12 matches as Mourinho's men went on to claim the trophy in Stockholm.

"Yes, it's good for me [that De Gea is staying]. He is a friend and we will keep working hard to help each other out in training. If he does well then I do well. So in that way, the level of performance will always be high," said Romero, according to the Manchester Evening News.

"It's better for the club that there is this competition there between me and David. The truth is that there exists a great friendship between us, we work hard in order help each other out. It's very important that we work in this way so we can get the most out of each other.

"If he puts pressure on me, I put pressure on him and it's the same with Joel [Pereira], who is working with us."

Romero has won three trophies during his first two seasons at Old Trafford.
