Wayne Rooney: World Cup was the "worst moment" of my career

Wayne Rooney brands England's dismal display at the World Cup as "the worst moment" in his career.

New England captain Wayne Rooney has branded the disappointment of the World Cup as "the worst moment" of his career.

The Three Lions lost their first two matches against Italy and Uruguay and were already eliminated from the Brazil tournament when they drew 0-0 with Costa Rica in the final match.

Rooney has since been appointed skipper by manager Roy Hodgson, and ahead of the game against Norway, the centre-forward reflected on their display in South America.

Speaking to ITV Sport, the Manchester United striker said: "It was the worst moment I've had in football to be honest.

"It's a great opportunity for these young lads to stamp a place in the team now and they have to take it because if not there are other players ready to do that. I'm not one to go on the internet and look up speeches but if I feel it's necessary to say something, I will [as captain].

"It's a great honour, I'm excited, proud and I'm ready. It's been the proudest moment of my England career. I demand a lot from myself, but I also demand a lot from my teammates as well, even as a young lad."
