Van der Sar: 'De Gea is not irreplaceable'

Former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar claims that Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is not irreplaceable at Old Trafford.

Edwin van der Sar has claimed that Manchester United will be able to replace David de Gea should the goalkeeper leave Old Trafford next summer.

The Spain international has entered his ninth campaign at the club with less than 12 months left on his contract, keeping open the possibility of an exit on a free transfer at the end of the season.

While United are attempting to agree fresh terms with the long-serving stopper, former player Van der Sar feels that the Premier League giants will not be short of options should they fail to negotiate a new deal.

The Dutchman is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "The decision needs to come at a certain point. It takes a long time now, so it's a case of 'yes' or 'no', but I'm not a director of United.

"Other goalkeepers can also fill the gap. There are a few Premier League goalkeepers playing at the club who can also take the step up. I was 34 when I went to United. So there are lots of opportunities there."

De Gea has made 366 appearances for United since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
