Louis van Gaal refutes 'long ball' claims

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal denies that his side resorted to long balls during the latter stages of Sunday's 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has played down suggestions that his side used 'long-ball' tactics in Sunday's 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce claimed after the match that his side struggled to deal with United's use of the long ball, but Van Gaal has insisted that the visitors did not resort to that tactic.

"You have to look at the data and then you will see that we did play long balls, but long balls wide, rather than to the striker," Van Gaal told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

"A ball to the forward striker is mainly called long ball play. We are playing ball possession play."

United return to action at home to Burnley on Wednesday.
