Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney reportedly compares January arrival Bruno Fernandes to legendary midfielder Paul Scholes.

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney reportedly likened Bruno Fernandes to Paul Scholes in the aftermath of Thursday's FA Cup clash with Derby County.

Rooney is United's all-time leading goalscorer but now plays his football for Derby, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Red Devils in the fifth round of the FA Cup last week.

The 34-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who had January signing Fernandes in their starting lineup at Pride Park.

According to The Sun, Rooney compared the Portugal international to legendary midfielder Scholes for his performance against the Championship side.

Indeed, the publication quotes a source as saying: "Wayne loved being back on the pitch against United. He loves the club. He told the players they were a very, very good team and that they will only get better now Fernandes has signed for them.

"Wayne thought it was hard to get close to him at times and his performance reminded him of the way Paul Scholes played."

Fernandes has scored three times and provided two assists in seven appearances for the 20-time English champions since his mid-season move from Sporting Lisbon.
