Preview: Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester United play host to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday. Here, Sports Mole looks ahead to the clash.

It may have come too late to make them realistic challengers for the title, but Manchester United have at least played themselves into contention for a top-four place in recent weeks.

David Moyes's side have won their last six encounters in all competitions, including four in the Premier League.

Such form has elevated the champions up to sixth and depending on other results, the Red Devils could move up to fourth in the league table if they claim all three points from Wednesday's home clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

It is expected that Wayne Rooney will return to the team from a groin problem, while Robin van Persie is also thought to be in contention, albeit as a substitute.

However, Portuguese winger Nani will play no part because of a hamstring injury and the match is likely to come too soon for Phil Jones, who has a keen problem.

As for visiting Spurs, manager Tim Sherwood will be without the defensive duo of Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul because of hip and ankle injuries respectively.

Spurs won at Old Trafford last year for the first time since 1989, with Gareth Bale getting among the goals.
