Irish League XI 1-4 Manchester United

A strong Manchester United team beat an Irish League XI 4-1 at Windsor Park in Harry Gregg's testimonial.

Manchester United have beaten an Irish League XI 4-1 at Windsor Park in Harry Gregg's testimonial match.

A strong United lineup dominated the early exchanges as the Irish XI, managed by Martin O'Neill struggled to assert themselves in the match.

Michael Owen should have given United the lead in the 15th minute but he failed to hit the target from close range following a cross from Dimitar Berbatov.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team were ahead just five minutes later when Patrice Evra exchanged passes with Owen before stroking the ball into the bottom corner from inside the area.

The Irish XI improved as the first half wore on and enjoyed a lot of the possession as the game reached half time.

United started slowly in the second period and the Irish XI quickly levelled the match.

Cliftonville striker Chris Scannel beat Jonny Evans to a low cross and headed past Anders Lindegaard to make the score 1-1.

The match was not level for long however as Ashley Young bent a free kick into the top corner to restore United's lead.

Wayne Rooney came off the bench to make the score 3-1 from the penalty spot after Tom Cleverley was brought down in the area.

United's class was clear as the match entered the final stages and Young grabbed his second of the match following good work from Park Ji-Sung to complete the scoring.
