Rafael Benitez has insisted that Louis van Gaal has "nothing to do" with Marouane Fellaini's proposed move to Napoli.
The Belgium international midfielder, who joined Manchester United last summer, is expected to leave Old Trafford, with the Partenopei favourites to land his signature.
When asked why another target, Javier Mascherano, did not make the move to Italy, Benitez is quoted by FourFourTwo as saying: "It didn't depend on the coach but on the project. That will be the case with Fellaini too. Van Gaal has nothing to do with it."
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis last week confirmed that the club were interested in signing Fellaini.
