Tony Cascarino has insisted that Cesc Fabregas is the type of player that Manchester United should try to sign this summer.
The Spanish international is thought to have been made available for transfer by Barcelona, with the Premier League his most likely destination.
However, while it's widely recognised that United's midfield is in need of reinforcements, it has been reported that new manager Louis van Gaal has no plans to make a bid for the former Arsenal captain.
Nevertheless, ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino believes that the 27-year-old would fit the bill at Old Trafford.
"Manchester United desperately need someone like Fabregas. They need someone to replace Paul Scholes. Michael Carrick is fantastic on the ball but Cesc just gives you a little bit more," he told talkSPORT.
"He's 27 now and has been in and out of the team at Barcelona. He's not cemented a place in that side. He should be playing week in and week out."
As it stands, speculation has claimed that Chelsea are the favourites to sign Fabregas.
