David de Gea reportedly rejects Manchester United's latest contract offer, but he is still expected to sign a new deal at the club.

David de Gea has reportedly rejected Manchester United's latest contract offer, with the goalkeeper not prepared to accept a huge reduction on his current salary.

The 31-year-old is the club's highest-paid player on £375,000 a week, but the deal is due to expire at the end of June, and there has been a host of speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

De Gea has expressed on a number of occasions his desire to remain at Man United, and the club are believed to be keen to keep him despite recent talk that a new number one could be signed this summer.

The Spaniard has been an important player for the Red Devils this term, featuring on 42 occasions in all competitions, keeping 18 clean sheets in the process.

De Gea has put in a number of impressive performances in recent weeks, although his distribution from the back continues to be criticised.

According to The Athletic, Man United want the Spaniard to take a huge reduction on his current salary, and the stopper is said to be willing to drop his wages in order to sign a new deal.

However, the report claims that the latest contract offer has been turned down, with De Gea believing that he still deserves to be one of the best-paid players at the club.

Man United are expected to return with a fresh proposal, and the fact that the goalkeeper is so keen to sign a new deal means that there is likely to be a positive conclusion.

De Gea made the move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in July 2011, and he has now represented the 20-time English champions on 529 occasions in all competitions.

The Spaniard is now 10th on the all-time appearance list for the club, just six outings behind Denis Irwin, while he could also pass Tony Dunne (535) and Alex Stepney (539) this term.

There are expected to be big changes in the goalkeeping department at Old Trafford this summer, which could lead to another stopper being signed as back-up to De Gea.

Dean Henderson is set to return to the club following a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, but the England international could then depart on a permanent basis.

As it stands, Jack Butland will return to parent club Crystal Palace, while Tom Heaton - the current number two - only has a deal with Erik ten Hag's side until the end of June.

Brentford's David Raya continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, with the Spaniard potentially leaving Thomas Frank's team during the upcoming market.
