David de Gea's Manchester United future reportedly remains in the balance ahead of the expiry of his contract at the end of the month.

The future of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly still in the balance ahead of the expiry of his contract at the end of the month.

The Spaniard now has fewer than seven days left to run on his £375,000-a-week terms and must accept a significant pay cut if he is to stay on at Old Trafford.

Man United are thought to be happy to keep De Gea around and have offered him a new deal, but his fresh terms would see his wages slashed by around £200,000 a week.

There is yet to be a breakthrough in talks between De Gea and Man United, and head coach Erik ten Hag has admitted that he cannot guarantee the 32-year-old a regular starting role next season.

Having been the subject of scathing criticism for error-strewn performances last season - making four mistakes directly leading to a goal in all competitions - De Gea could be playing second fiddle to a new number one for the 2023-24 campaign.

When announcing their released list earlier this month, Man United confirmed that "discussions remains open" with De Gea over a new deal, but according to Sky Sports News, his future is still in the balance.

The report adds that the Red Devils plan to move for a new shot-stopper regardless of De Gea's future, and it is unclear if the Spain international would be willing to accept a backup role next term.

De Gea had big gloves to fill when he joined Man United in 2011 to succeed Edwin van der Sar, but the ex-Atletico Madrid man has now kept more clean sheets than any other Red Devils goalkeeper.

The Spaniard surpassed Peter Schmeichel's shutout record in the 2022-23 season and now has 190 clean sheets to show from 545 games, putting him seventh in the club's all-time appearance list.

De Gea won the Premier League's Golden Glove for the second time last term, keeping 17 clean sheets in 38 top-flight matches and winning the EFL Cup - his eighth piece of silverware with the Red Devils.

In terms of possible replacements, Man United are believed to be pushing for the signing of Inter Milan's Andre Onana, who kept eight Champions League clean sheets last term to help the Nerazzurri reach the final.

Ten Hag's side are thought to be the frontrunners for Onana's signature after Chelsea withdrew their interest, but they could be quoted more than £50m to capture the Cameroonian.

Brentford's David Raya has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils have so far not shown a willingness to meet the Bees' £40m asking price.

Porto's Diogo Costa and Everton's Jordan Pickford have emerged as alternative targets for Man United, who are also expected to offload Dean Henderson permanently this summer.
